The Role of the Student Assistance Counselor
As a Student Assistance Counselor, I am a resource for students, families, teachers, administrators, and staff. When a student or family is experiencing some sort of stress, I may assist in determining the needs of the child and family and coordinating resources, which are available in school and outside, within our communities.
As part of a network of specialists within our school,I work very closely with our school nurse, child study team members, principal and assistant principal in order to best serve the entire Brooks Crossing community. All of our specialists share the goal of helping our students to become the very best learners they can be.
I spend time getting to know your children by visiting the classrooms and sharing lessons with them. Typical lessons cover topics such as personal safety, expressing feelings, solving conflicts, showing respect for others, and bullying prevention. Our lessons also focus on the CARES values: Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self Control.
I meet with students both individually and in small groups. These meetings are always scheduled at the convenience of the classroom teacher.
My favorite part of my job is getting to know the students. I sometimes eat lunch with individual students or small groups of children. It may be to discuss a particular issue, resolve a conflict or simply for fun at their request.
Group Counseling
Small groups are formed to meet the needs of our students. Small groups may focus on topics such as improving social skills, coping skills, communication skills and self-esteem. They usually meet for 30 minutes weekly for 6 to 8 week cycles. The goals of small group counseling are: for students to have a safe place to share their feelings, to practice new skills with other students, and to have a more successful school experience.
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling may be provided on a short-term basis to students who are experiencing difficulties at home or in school. For example, I may meet with a student who is having difficulty making friends, is anxious about school work, is having conflicts with peers, or has experienced the loss of a loved one or pet. Please note that school counseling is less intense than counseling provided by a counselor outside the school system. If you need help finding a counselor or other mental health care provider for your child or your family, please contact me.
Family Assistance
I frequently talk to parents about issues concerning their children. I am available to discuss behavior issues, family issues, loss issues, moving transitions, and separation/divorce concerns. I can also provide information about community resources that may be available to you.
